If they had spiked the ball successfully, Ferrin would have almost certainly kicked the FG at the end of the 1st half, changing the dynamics at the end of the game. If combined with 4 (or 7) fewer ute points (assuming they would have been held to a FG or forced to punt, instead of BYU giving up a TD after the Glasker sack that got negated by the phony facemask penalty), BYU could have had a comfortable lead at the end of the game, especially if you also add in the point they lost going for 2 when trying to come back in the 2nd half.
So there you have it. One silly unforced error and one (horrendously) bad call ended up costing BYU somewhere between 3 and 11 points in the first half, and resulted in Jake being forced to lead a last-minute drive to win the game. Fortunately, they were able to overcome the adversity and pull it off.
