Thoughts, myths and half truths from the BYU game
* Let's address the elephant in the room first. Was it a hold? Yes 100%. That should be called every time and is over 50% of the time. I have not seen one unbiased 3rd party who didn't think it was a hold.

* I can understand some ire from Ute FANS. They thought they won. Heck I thought they won. They didn't. That is a hard pill to swallow. I get that, especially with fans being irrational.

* The outrage from Whittingham and Harlan shows the utter lack of class that they have. The fact that the Utah AD had the gall to call out refs as being unprofessional is so appalling and may be one of the most hypocritical comments I have ever seen.

* In any football game there will be a number of calls that go against you/for you that change things dramatically. Any good coach will tell you that you have to play through the good and the bad. I was upset at the phantom facemask call. But you keep playing. It would be difficult to follow either of those two men after their tantrums. Fans can complain, coaches should be on to the next play. AD's should be in the press box.

* Make no mistake, BYU was the better team on Saturday. BYU had 339 yards to Utah's 259. BYU produced two turnovers to none for Utah and on top of that we had a kickoff return for a TD.

* Our Red Zone defense was atrocious. The Kuithe TD run looked like a Tuiaki called scheme. I have no idea what was going on.

* BYU's game plan overall was not good on Saturday. I am not sure why, but we seemingly didn't know what to expect.

* Sitake, please oh please hire someone to tell you how to handle the clock. The subbing was on A-Rod (something we 100% should have been prepared for as they have been doing this all season), but with 29 seconds in the half my son and I both turned to each other and said to call timeout. Instead we waited until 21 seconds to call timeout. Then you get a first down and look completely lost as to what is going on. Have you not practiced these situations?

* We saw last year's Retzlaff on Saturday with the one big exception of no interceptions. He finished 15-33 for 219 yards and a 101.2 passer rating and 39.5 QBR. Rose had a 123 and 72 in those ratings. Even on completions the ball was not placed by Retzlaff where it should have been as there were a lot of open guys with run after the catch opportunities. The throw out of bounds while rolling out to a wide open Marion was Tebowesque. After having watched the big play to Roberts over and over I am fully convinced he was throwing to Lassiter. The ball was a duck. At 6'1" with an extremely low throwing motion Jake could not get the ball over lineman. Expect other teams to really focus on this moving forward. His fumble near the goal line was a big mistake that we were extremely fortunate to get back. But at the end of the day we are 9-0 and Jake is 1-0 against Utah. That is all that matters looking backwards. Looking forwards if he plays like that again we are in big trouble.

* Utah played inspired football defensively. This is what we expected to see from Utah all year long defensively and for the most part they have come through. They have a good front 7 and a really good front 4.

* The one play that almost lost us the game was the 3rd and 11 throw over the outstretched arms of Raider Damuni. We were playing a two deep coverage and Rose should have in no way thrown that ball. But he threw a good ball and Damuni had taken a wrong step and Wall was slow to react. Big play for Utah and about 30% of his passing yards for the game.

* Each of our safeties made critical errors in that game and made me question our safety by committee approach that has worked so far this year. Wall not laying a hand on Rose on a QB run that was right at him. Prassas taking a terrible angle on a deep pass. Satuala slow to react to a swing pass. Wakely getting turned completely the wrong way on a TD pass. It wasn't their finest moment. But Wakely did make a good play on the Int.

* Whatever Hill changed and told them at half time was perfect. The defense played completely different in the 2nd half. When Utah ran the ball they were punished for it. When they threw the ball Rose got hit. That was the defense from the first 5 weeks of the season that I hope we see again.

* I don't think Chase Roberts gets enough credit on this team. He is really, really good and early he was punishing Utah for one on one coverage on the outside. They doubled him most of the game. His route running skills are extremely underrated.

* LJ Martin ran the ball well on Saturday. Really well. Still I would have liked to have seen that one run go for a TD. He really needs to work on his pass blocking and if you wonder why he doesn't get as many reps as he should that is why.

* I have never been a big Ropati fan, but he played on Saturday. He made some big runs and at least got in the way in pass blocking. Great game Ropati!

* Kansas is the next test. They are very underrated by many in the Big 12. They lost close heartbreakers to UNLV and Illinois in the non conference. Both turned out to be better than initially expected. They just beat Iowa St and their vaunted defense putting up 45 points. They put up 42 on a pretty good Houston defense. 31 on Arizona St. 27 to Kansas St and barely lost that game at the end. They are 3-6, but their offense is dynamic. They are ranked 40th in the country in FEI with the 17th ranked offense. Sagarin has them at #28 overall. They are better than the team we just played.
