Firstly, it’s a hobby that I do because I love football and it’s something to do to support the community. I do my best with it and study a lot more than I need to at this level - but I’m in no way a college level ref. It’s a hobby that pays almost nothing.
That play had all the indicators of a hold. Arms extended outside of the body, twisting motion of the opponent, and clearly gave an advantage. Ref saw it and threw the flag right away (not after the sack as Utah fans are saying).
To his point of “calling felonies, not misdemeanors” in end-of-game situations - I have literally never heard that before. You call a game clean, ESPECIALLY when it’s close. If a score is 66-3, I don’t want to extend the game because of something non-egregious. Even then, you still might throw a flag on a hold that obvious.
In a competitive game, you have to be even more by-the-book than normal. Not the other way around. You throw that flag 10 times out of 10 in that situation.
