Thoughts being at the game
I couldn’t sleep after getting home last night. The adrenaline was still going strong hours after the game ended. Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat is an amazing feeling.

I was there when Kaneshiro boinked a winning field goal off the goalpost to lose it for the Utes. I thought nothing could top that game. I was wrong. Last night every Ute in Rice Eccles was into the game start to finish. It was loud all night. They were sure they had won. Not once, but twice. Then the letdown. Utterly devastating.

We were in row 55 of the BYU section close to the band. Loudspeakers with music pretty much drowned out most of the BYU chants last night, but we still got some BYU chants in late in the 4th quarter and of course after the game.

Ute fans were generally cordial. University staff welcomed us and were helpful. My 2 daughters got a little smack from Utes when they went to get food during halftime but overall a decent experience for a visiting BYU fan. A far cry from previous experiences attending this game when I’ve had drinks and food thrown at me and Ute fans swearing at me during the game.

I was disappointed after the game to see a half dozen high school age BYU fans taunting Ute fans as they left the stadium. The follies of youth. Another BYU fan next to me yelled at them to stop and told them that isn’t the way BYU fans act. They stopped, at least until we exited.

I can even understand Harlan and Whittingham overreacting. It’s an emotional time. You’ve just lost a game you are sure you’ve won. Rumor has it that many Ute recruits were at the game, so it wasn’t just about the game. It was about the future of the Ute program. It has to be frustrating beyond belief for the Utes.

How sweet it is for all of us long suffering BYU fans. My family will talk about this game for a long time whenever we get together.
