First of all, like him or not...he is an excellent coach for those types of games. His track record confirms it. He get his team/staff up and they come ready to play. They just about had BYU right where they wanted them...actually they did.
The subbing strategy that Scalley/Whit clearly practiced...all of it...brilliant.
BUT...KW showed weakness in the armor.
1. Kicks a punt when they are on our side of the field...I think he normally goes for it there. He trust his special teams and his defense, but I think looking back, he does go for it. This decision is forgivable from a Ute's perspective, especially if BYU doesn't get that TD.
But then you have his decisions on the last drive.
When he decided to decline the time penalty (by the way, are you allowed to decline the time but keep the yards??? We got 10 seconds back, but the ball remained 1st &15...I don't get that)...anyway, when he declined the time penalty...he showed his cards that he felt BYU would score and he wanted to keep time on the clock...and then he takes both Timeouts. This was very unlike KW. He was playing not to lose, rather than playing to win.
He has the Defense and BYU has proven in this game that they may panic with the time mgt situation...so why not let it run? He burns both timeouts...giving our team some added confidence...validating that the opposing coach thinks they're gonna score. And then to see BYU run the ball...and get the kicking unit out there w/out making a mistake in that Hornet's Nest under 30 seconds and get that kick off?!!! Seriously incredible.
I wonder if we pull that off if KW let's the clock run. Guess we'll never know 🙂
