Consider Dworkin’s famous “checkerboard rule”
The rule is inherently unjust if it is ignore-able because “we haven’t been catching it / calling it every play” or “at some times (late in the game or in a close game) the rule should be disregarded”
The approach must be “we call ot every time we see it”
A checkerboard rule is a logically defective type of rule, law, or policy. It is easiest to define by example, because there are competing theories as to exactly what makes checkerboard rules logically defective.

If there are mistakes about what you saw (like with the facemask) that’s different and more forgiveable (as human error) than thinking you’re entitled to not have fouls called because you’re special or they happen at special times.
