I was told they could, entirely legally and quietly, ruin your career in countless tiny ways; and that someday, you would need them to give you the benefit of the doubt.

I am sure that referees try hard to be fair and unbiased, and recognize they make mistakes. I am also sure they can, just by not giving Utah the benefit of the doubt, job them over if they choose.
