I wasn’t the biggest fan before my freshman year at BYU. I got the ROC pass (don’t remember the real name) and showed up for the Tulane game. It was pouring during that game and we were pouring it on Tulsa. It was an absolute blast and I was hooked.
I was into every game immediately. My roommate scored us tickets in the Yewt student section for the BYU game that year. We decided to paint ourselves blue and marched in like we owned the place. I had no idea what I was in for. I grew up in Virginia and didn’t realize their vileness in my naive fandom.
The SLTribune took this picture of me as we started to lose that game in the 3rd quarter. I was looking at the scoreboard as the fans were looking at the field. My grandpa, who was since passed, called the Tribune and got the high quality photo and printed it out and framed it.
I love BYU football. It means more than just a football team to me. I love to cheer, follow, and party with my kids, wife, friends, family, and cougarboard.
My son, 8, has packed 3 byu shirts for his weekend with his grandma and grandpa this weekend. He has noted that kids at his school don’t wear Utah stuff anymore and loves that more and more people wear BYU with him.
BYU by 50 tonight.
