Jaren only threw 18/30 (60%) for 149 yards. Tyler Allgeier carried it 27x for 102 yards (3.78 yards/carry). BYU had 380 total yards, punted 5x (!), and was 2/2 on FG.
Benard actually ran 146 yards on 12 carries (12.2 yards/carry). Brewer threw 15/26 (58%) for 147 yards. Utah had 340 total yards, punted only 2x, and was 1/2 on FG. I think Utah would take those numbers tomorrow if you offered it to them, they haven't hit 340 total yards of offense in their last two games.
The stats that stand out from BYU's 26-17 win are:
1) Jaren Hall had 92 rushing yards on just 8 caries.
2) BYU had 0 TOs, while Utah had 2 (1 INT and 1 FUM).
3) BYU was 11/19 on 3rd down (1/1 on 4th), Utah was 2/9 (0/2 on 4th).
I hope Jake studied every snap of that game, because as we've seen in 2021 and even during Utah's 4 game losing streak, you don't have to be special offensively to beat them. You just need to stay disciplined and take what the defense gives you.
Jake tomorrow needs to not force things through the air, and perhaps use his legs extra this game, particularly against Utah's tight man coverage. Given how inept Utah's offense is, and even how mediocre their FG-kicking has been this season, throwing the ball away and punting in a field-position battle is infinitely preferable to risky 50:50 balls. Make Utah's offense beat you. Don't give Utah's defense chances to win the game for them.
