Ute fans, local media, Ute players, and Ute coaches were bragging about how awesome this team was going to be. They were loud and proud about how this was the "deepest and most talented Utah team ever." Gordon Monson guaranteed that they would make the college football playoffs. They were going to run the Big12 and just steam roll everyone on their schedule.
As for BYU, the local media was saying BYU would only win 4, maybe 5, games and would miss out on a bowl game. There was no word coming out of BYU camp from the coaches or players. No boisterous hyperbole or bragging. They quietly went about doing their business. One of the only things we heard was from Hans Olsen who said that the team had a ton of confidence in themselves going into this season and that they must know something he doesn't. (I love Hans, by the way. This isn't a criticism of him.)
Here we are in the final month of the season and Utah is fighting for bowl eligibility while BYU is firmly in the mix for the CFP. Utah would have to win every one of their remaining games and BYU would have to lose everyone of our remaining games for the two teams to end the season with the same record. Utah has to play the three top teams in the Big12. BYU gets to play 3 of the bottom 4 teams.
It's an almost unbelievable turn of events for the two programs. BYU is sitting where Utah thought they would be. But instead, Utah is now sitting where they claimed BYU would be. All the bragging, trash talking, condescension, and arrogance from Ute fans has caused many of them to give up on their team.
