Forget the stats!
Sorry, folks, and with sincere apologies to Bill Shakespeare, methinks tomorrow’s iteration of the Holy War is not one of those predictable affairs where “Past is prologue.” Like Lucy and the football, HOW MANY TIMES have BYU fans put such faith in the “stats” and “analysis” only to find that the Mutes had better athletes and coaches or just the right amount of luck on that particular day? The answer is: TOO MANY! I do not deny that the preponderance of most measurable game stats tilts decidedly in our favor tomorrow. However, as someone who has lived through a period of BYU winning 19 of 21 games against Utah (1972-1992), I am also painfully aware of having lost 10 of our last 12 games to those filthy swine!

My special advice to players, coaches, and fans alike is to ignore every stat spewed by Greg Wrubell, Hans Olsen, Ben Criddle, all the morons on 1280, everyone at the Tribune and Deseret News, and all family members and friends who think tomorrow’s BYU win is in the bag. Cautious optimism coupled with the same quiet confidence, preparation, and humility the players have exemplified this entire season is the order of the day for all.

Go Cougs!!
