I had hopes back in the 2020 covid year that BYU would be ranked highly and instead the committee dropped them citing poor strength of schedule. That initial unveiling was when I fully realized that the whole committee setup is truly about getting the teams from the right conferences (ie SEC and Big10) in as many spots as possible. The committee members are hired to be on that committee by those conferences so that they direct the associated payouts/attention back to those conferences. It’s not a scam - it’s a business model. The committee will then throw out whatever anecdotal evidence to support any team they want to, even if that line of reasoning is directly contradicted by their rationale for the other SEC team they are propping up.
Furthermore, the power 2 want to get rid of the committee and just have the top 4-5 schools from their conferences auto qualify while the big 12/acc get one or two each. They’ll screw the acc and big12 this year to heighten their negotiating leverage for the next iteration of the playoff.
As soon as you stop pretending that it’s supposed to be fair, the sooner you’ll realize that for a school like BYU, the path to the championship is either undefeated in regular season or win the big 12 CCG. Much better than the old system but not level with the SEC or Big10. Go cougars!
