There's no doubt about it. But it's also the right thing for them to do. He's a
kid who was just speaking his mind, and likely reflects what he hears and what most of the kids there think about BYU; and maybe from some coaches as well, though I doubt any of them phrase it like that. More likely the players feel/hear the hate for BYU from coaches, admin, friends, etc and so of course when he had the chance he was just going to say what he thought.

He shouldn't have said it, obviously - which is why the AD or the coaches or someone at the u made him issue this statement. I think it's understood that the kids don't write these, someone else does and asks them to issue it.

Good sign, imo, for the kid that he did it though. I"m not sure it would be required or just requested - I suspect requested and so I give him credit for accepting the recommendation.

But do I believe he reflected on it and after a while felt so bad that he decided to write that on his own? No. Not much of a chance it went that way. He never gave it a second thought until an adult asked him to either reconsider it or just hand him something he could publish.
