Make no mistake. It had little to do w Pope leaving. It was all about BYU doing a 180 in their restrictions on
financing & on player recruiting.
Those were both things Pope was tirelessly trying to change in his five years as HC. And was getting only incrementally improving support for along the way.

No. They were coming VERY slowly before Pope left. I think it's clear they were part of KY's contract
