Red and black is particularly garish

Red with other colors is much better:
Yellow (Chiefs, ISU, USC, etc.)
Blue (Ole Miss, KU, AZ, etc.)
Grey (Ohio State)
White (OU, Indiana, Arkansas)
Etc.
Helps to go with something slightly off-red, like some of those above.
