and by afford, I mean pay him enough that he wouldn't get a significant raise to go ANYWHERE else as a DC, and most places as a HC. For Kalani to be successful as a HC he needs guys like Jay Hill on staff. Kalani is the same guy most of us have complained about for many of his years as the BYU HC: not a great disciplinarian or X's and O's guy. He needs great assistants for those roles. He is good as a CEO type, as the face of the program, at keeping the mission of BYU front and center of the football program, and all the things that are important to BYU and church leadership for being a BYU head coach. The combination of talent on the coaching staff (Kalani, Hill, etc.) and senior leadership among the players is the secret sauce this year.
If we can keep the current staff together for a few more years and then be able to replace those who inevitably leave with similar caliber guys I think BYU can have sustained success at the national level like we had under Lavell. Kalani has grown as a coach, especially the last couple years. Now he just needs to consistently be allowed to pay for the tools he needs. If we have to go back to being a budget program, Kalani will not succeed.
