Back in the BCS Era, I would rank championship worthiness by a simple formula of win and loss points scaled by the opponent's Sagarin standing: for Sagarin Top 10 teams 2/-1 pts for a win/loss, for Sagarin Top 30 teams 1/-2 pts for a win/loss, for all other teams 0/-3 pts for a win/loss. This accumulates resume points to tier the teams (with Sagarin SoS as a tie-break).
Below is the "sagarin resume" tiering. Not perfect but reasonable, and with no human/conference bias.
Note, BYU lands competitively, Texas and Ohio State on the playoff bubble!, ND = SMU, and Army over Boise?
