Last season was a disaster as we all know but I don't think A-Rod was exactly wrong. Some of the quotes during and after the season talked about how much they underestimated how difficult it was to bring transfers in and gel right away.
BYU brought in a ton of transfers last year, but they kept a lot of that talent for this year. Seeing them succeed this year leads me to believe that A-Rod wasn't wrong, it just didn't translate on the field. Now after a year in the program, and some elevated coaching in key areas, we're seeing that talent translate.
Also, looking at Utah's situation, they brought in a ton of transfers this year and it has been a disaster. I think for programs to succeed they need to have a solid base and pepper in transfers here and there. Relying on too many transfers is a recipe for losing. Don't know the playbook, dont know the calls, but maybe most importantly they don't know the culture and aren't fully bought into that culture day one. So if you have 60 of those guys it is going to be a real problem getting them to play together and execute the vision. If it is only like 10 they can assimilate much faster.
