It’s almost as if Tolkien used Middle Earth as a backdrop for different styles of story telling. The Hobbit is a kids
Book, complete with even a “golf joke” by Gandalf which doesn’t fit with the seriousness of the lore.

LOTR is what we’d call high fantasy now, but was an adventure novel. Hurin is a Greek tragedy, and the prose is written as such.

The styles are completely different and they are all great.

It’s a shame he couldn’t live long enough to finish and polish more tales.
