Watching the Big12 Basketball Media day today on ESPNU
Enjoyed watching each of the teams presentations. There’s been so much roster turnover in the Big12, BYU fans worry about our roster turnover but we’re pretty middle of the road as far as returning production and minutes vs new guys compared to the rest of the conference. There’s going to be a lot of feeling each other out between Big12 teams.

It was funny to hear KY talk about how gifted of a passer and facilitator Egor Demin is in the offense. He said he and the assistant coaches have joked they can’t tell if their defense is just really bad or is it cuz Demin is just that good in seeing the floor and finding open teammates.

Speaking of Demin, Fran Fraschilla noted that at one time he referred to him as the 6’8” PG but was corrected that he is in fact 6’9” and still growing. Listening to Trevin Knell’s interview just now, he said Egor is 6’10”. After seeing that pic of Egor and Dybantsa together….hmmm maybe he is still growing?

On Catchings, KY said he’s still growing physically as well as in skill. He said Kanon has improved at a faster rate than anyone else on the team.

Also interesting to note they discussed a little the changing nature of the Head Coaching role in college basketball due to the transfer portal and NIL and how it’s driving some coaches out (Coach Bennett at UVA). KY noted that coming from the NBA he’s uniquely suited to this new era of coaching and it’s closer to being like the NBA than people realize. He said when he was trying to hire his assistant staff at BYU he initially planned to hire all college assistants but realized a need to pivot and go in the direction he went and bring in more NBA guys so he had a blend of both worlds. For CB fans who worry about how our staff will handle coaching in college, it certainly seems they are one of the more (if not the most) uniquely situated staffs for coaching in this era of college basketball. It’s a whole new world for just about every staff and they’re all having to evolve and adapt on the fly to the changing landscape of college NIL era.
