Herbstreit actually called this when he was the only panelist on game day to predict a BYU win. He said we would put the star quarterback (whose athleticism had been his towering strength) in obvious passing situations and make it tough on him.
That’s what happened. Stadium noise also played a factor. We made a lot of big plays in short succession. Does that mean it was fortuitous?
One could describe the Kingston punt return touchdown as lucky. I don’t know that I’ll ever see something quite like that repeated. But it also helps when you don’t take out your own players multiple times, particularly when the opposition has a high school track and field sprint champ, returning the kick. We were lucky that the ball bounced back to where Kingston could field it and, I suppose, that Kansas State executed so poorly.
Beyond that, I’m not sure what else we supposed to attribute to just good fortune in a game where we kept the other team out of the end zone and took care of the ball on our end.
