Lately I can't get them to switch over to snow tires that are "too old."
It's a great business decision. I honestly don't know how much is science, but according to tire salesmen:

* Fix-a-flat makes the tire explode
* Tires over 10 years old are too dangerous to put on, not matter how good the tread
* Tires that don't match perfectly are dangerous, so you should only buy all four
* Oh and warped or grooved rotors need to be lathed
