What do you think a great QB is nowadays?
Here's the built-in assumption you're working from. If A-rod could get the great drop-back, big body, strong arm QBs, it would be better for BYU. The more mobility the better. Essentially Avery Johnson.

But would you recognize a great QB in today's game if you saw it? IF what you are thinking is a guy who looked like Nielsen, Wilson, McMahon, Bosco, or even Beck or Max Hall, then I'd challenge you to realize that is exactly what we got with Slovis. But it turns out, that's not what today's game needs. I think of Detmer and Zach Wilson as anomalies but different types. In the end, neither could measure up against fierce competition. But Taysom Hill, Jaron Hall, and to a lesser extent, Riley Nelson, represent the modern game's preferred QB (Think Mahomes over Peyton Manning). Jake Retzlaff matches this mold and A-rod saw it. When you consider the three guys behind Jake, I think all of them are more like that too. Cade Finnegan and Baylor Romney were more like Slovis and the old school drop-back QBs.

I speculate is that it isn't that A-rod can't recruit the great QBs, it's that a great QB (by old standards) means less today than what it used to.
