Theory on why the B1G & SEC are trying get guaranteed playoffs spots right now
We already know the SEC & Big10 will try anything to flex their power as the top two conferences currently. The teams in those conferences have dominated college football for the last 20 years. However, this year and since NIL started, there has been an increasing amount of parity amongst college football as a whole. NIL levels the playing field (not entirely, but a lot) and the almighty $$ reigns supreme. No way BYU Basketball builds the team they currently have so quickly without NIL.

While the SEC & B1G have plenty of $$ to attract good talent, so do other teams. What is to stop a major donor from UNLV from outbidding an SEC team for a 5⭐ guy? Nothing. I bet most recruits would take an extra million to play for a team like NC State over a team like Mississippi State or LSU.

The proof of this parity comes from their OOC record. The SEC & B1G are a combined 39-39 in their OOC games over the last two years. That's a winning percentage of only 50%! Should the "best" two leagues in the country be winning OOC at a much higher rate than that? Yes. They know that.

So they see the leveling of the playing field and realize that more parity means less $$ for them. So how do they regain power if they can't win the recruiting battle? Change the structure to unevenly favor you! These "best" leagues are trying to secure a guarantee of FOUR spots each for the CFP. They're desperate and realize that their top-dawg status is at-risk so they are flexing that status while it still exists before it more chaos ensues.

Hopefully they don't succeed because this parity is awesome and gave us an NIU win over ND and a Vandy win over Bama and it's incredible.
