As a grew up, my father introduced me to BYU football at Cougar Stadium. We listened to away games on the radio. Then the late 70s, and the 80s and the 90s happened for BYU football. Expectations "went through the roof." If a player fumbled the football, threw an interception, or made a particularly bad penalty, I would hear my dad say, "If I were the coach, I'd bench that player and play someone else who would not do that." One Saturday, we were watching a game on TV. A player fumbled the football. Typically, my dad responded, "If I were the coach ..." I started laughing and responded, "Dad, for 20 years I've heard how you as coach would have benched player after player who made mistakes. At one time or another, you would have benched everyone of the greatest players BYU has ever had." He quit saying that, but I am sure he still felt the angst when mistakes happened. We all care and that is great! Go Cougs.
