CrimWalCoug All-American in practice
How did BYU Men’s Cross-Country do compared to my projections? My review of each BYU runner.
Actual vs. Projected Finish

1. Casey Clinger - 1st/1st
He did what I expected him to do. If he’s going to be top 5 at NCAAs, I would have expected him to blow out his teammates. Was he kind of slow, or were his teammates just that fast today?

2. James Corrigan - 2nd/7th
In the past he’s started slow and worked his way up. That won’t work at NCAAs, so it was good to see him run the entire race with the front pack and make a move at the end to take 2nd.

3. Aidan Troutner - 3rd/9th
Has looked strong in his first two races of the season. He ran up front but ran well within himself. Finished only two seconds behind Casey Clinger.

4. Creed Thompson - 4th/5th
Solid race. Tough to tell just how fit he is. He was 6th overall at Nuttycombe, so he’s definitely in the mix. Is he a top 15 guy at NCAAs or a top 40 guy? Not sure.

5. Joey Nokes - 5th/3rd
Similar story to Creed. Got 8th overall at Nuttycombe.

6. Lucas Bons - 7th/19th
Great to see him make a leap from last race. Was only 14 seconds behind Casey Clinger after being 71 seconds behind him at Nuttycombe.

7. Davin Thompson - 10th/12th
Has been struggling with an injury and hasn’t raced in six weeks after missing all of last season. This was a decent race for him. Hopefully he can stay healthy, though it may be tough for him to replicate his All-American performance from two seasons ago.l at NCAAs.

8. Berkley Nance - 15th/18th
Has been the biggest revelation this cross-country season as a true freshman. He continues to improve as the season goes on and will be a key piece in future seasons.

9. Dalton Mortensen - 23rd/38th
Even though Dalton is a freshman I had written him off as having a role on BYU’s future teams. This is a bit of a breakout performance for him - will be watching to see if he can layer on another really good performance.

10. Mark Boyle - 27th/41st
Decent performance for him.

11. Isaac Hedengren - 35th/20th
Ran Unattached so as to preserve eligibility. The idea was if he finished as a top 10 BYU runner they might pull his redshirt. Won’t happen now.

12. Luke Grundvig - 43rd/28th
Not sure what’s going on with him. Has had several poor races in a row.

13. Carter Cutting - 80th/58th
Ran the 1500m in the U20 World Championships in late August, which likely affected his cross-country training. Seems like this year is a bit of a throwaway season for him.

14. Caleb Johnson - 82nd/45th
Has gotten progressively worse through the season. Not sure what the deal is.

15. Jacob Stanford - DNF/15th
Was a lock to be in the top 10 and run in the post-season. However, he dropped out after 3k in this race - not sure if that changes things.

16. Garrett Stanford - DNS/23rd
He was another top 10 guy but seems to be having some injury/illness that may keep him from running in the post-season.
