There are a lot of reasons for this. There is still a chance for BYU-I to create an old school program. And it can return to a feeder school for top LDS athletes to develop under scholarship and bump up to the D1 level. If I'm Elder Rasband or whomever has the assignment to oversee this aspect for BYU athletics, I'm exploring this for a number of different reasons.
While this is under football, there are a number of other programs that would really benefit from having a feeder school. It would be a great way for BYU to maintain a strong legacy program for athletes that are on the fringe. It could build a brand that is two deep. And you can pile on me for that, but I really do believe that BYU athletics has a great mission. BYU-I could easily become a contender with the like of the Dakota & Montana schools. I believe BYU-I is going to develop a very strong alumni base that would love to have a brotherhood with the BYU.
