And here's the other part that will blow your mind if you're not familiar with
the base path rule: the "base path" is a straight line from wherever the runner is and the base at the time a tag is attempting to be applied. It is not a straight line between bases.


If a runner has found himself out in left field for some crazy reason and nobody had yet tried to apply a tag, the base path line isn't set until they actually do and it becomes a straight line from his position out left field to the base.
