It happened to a couple in my ward
The call was supposedly from their granddaughter attending BYU. The caller sounded like her and knew all kinds of details about her. She said she had hit a pedestrian and needed money fast to pay for the victims medical bills, or something like that. The girl’s father is an insurance broker so they told her to call her dad. Somehow the caller convinced them she was afraid to call her dad. Anyway, they got scammed out of $9,000. The scammer called and tried to get more with some new details to the story but the couple figured out the scam, just too late.
