The rate of occurrence can help us get a good sense for the probability of a lot of disasters: e.g. catastrophic volcanos, asteroids, military coups. The difficult disasters to get a feel of probability are the ones where there hasn't been a long (like thousands of years) precedence where it's even been possible: e.g. Skynet, Global Thermonuclear War, Unstoppable biological weapons.
