I would do 2-1 sugar versus 1-1. The bees don't have to evaporate as much water
that way. A little hint to make 2-1 easy. Get one of those 7 liter water pot boilers (link below) and a one gallon plastic pitcher. The beauty is that the 7 liters of water in a one gallon batch is very close to a 2-1 ratio. Fill the pitcher up about 1/2 with sugar, boil the water and add it, then add sugar until the pitcher is full. Stir a little bit until it is all dissolved and let it cool.

I also would suggest using an inhive feeder. While you have to open the box to refill, they hold a gallon and last longer (If money doesn't matter get a top of the hive feeder - not expensive but lots more than the in hive feeder) links of both below. Sometimes when it cools down at night, the sugar water can lose its pressure and just drain out. Regardless, it is usually no more than a quart. I have found the in hive or top feeders, especially are much more convenient.

I think you live in Socal, so the venting may not matter, but those are big holes that will let heat out when it chills. I'm impressed at your approach. Very nice job. You have done your homework. When are you getting your second hive? One isn't enough 🙂 Also, have you learned about varroa mite measurements and treatments? Oh, that's is a nice brood pattern. Looks like you got a good one.
