That play calling is inherently dynamic. You don't just get to run a scrip. It requires the coordinator/QB to adjust based on more than down/distance, but also defensive personnel, scheme, and likely play call. In addition there are week to week and in-game injuries that affect the call sheet. It's a game of chess with many more variables.
So many fans ignore those variables when the play Monday morning QB. I don't think coaches are perfect, but do think that they know a lot more about the options available as well as the competitive dynamic than I do. Definitely not call you out personally, just saying it's complex and so hard to distill to a few plays - good or bad.
