Another vote for "The Village" and "Signs" - these were good "introductory"

scary movies when my kids were teens... and they are favorite re-watches by our family during this time of year. They are well made and have some more interesting things to say then just providing jump scares...

I would also say the original "Poltergeist", but this deals with a little more evil, and possession/children in peril, so maybe not...
