This literally exactly just happened to a coworker.
She was out 6 months and for most of those we limped along. Finally, they hired a temporary fill who immediately filled the position better. Next thing we knew, she was off the payroll and the new guy was killing it permanently.

I felt a little bad for her (She was nice enough, but just didn't handle her team well). Although, if I'm honest, I don't miss her constantly telling me that dogs are as important as children and petitioning to be able to bring her fur babies in to work.
