Rise Against All-American
As a program, it's very impressive what BYU football has accomplished.
I saw this statistic and it really got me thinking:

In the entire history of BYU football, we have 17 wins at home against ranked teams. Lavell had 8 of those over a 30 year span. Bronco had 3 of those over an 11 year span. Kalani has 6 of those over a 9 year span. Crowton didn't have any.

Some people love to criticize Kalani as a head coach. And this isn't meant to be a Bronco vs Kalani argument, but for the people that love to complain that Kalani lost some games he shouldn't have, so did Bronco. So did Lavell. UTEP? Lavell losing to UTEP was pretty bad. In 1985 UTEP ended the season 1-10. Sometimes bad losses happen. Some fans also love to point out that some of those ranked teams that Kalani beat didn't end the season ranked. Yeah, same goes for some of the ranked teams Lavell and Bronco beat. My point of this is that we can criticize and complain plenty if that's all you want to look at. Every BYU coach has had shortcomings. A big part of that honestly is due to who BYU is. We have some big built in barriers to success like the honor code, academics, and low budget spending. Before being included in the Big12, did many BYU fans even realize that BYU was spending less on support staff than even Utah State? We had fewer support staff like strength and conditioning coaches, recruiting personnel, diet and nutrition staff, etc than Utah State. Think about that for a second. We were spending money like a low level G5 school, have the honor code and academic restrictions, and yet fans expect results like an Ohio State, Texas, or Alabama.

I fear that far too many BYU fans don't pay attention to college football and don't realize how unrealistic their expectations for BYU are. Nebraska, a program that sits towards the top of most wins and national championships all time, with all of their 5 star and 4 star recruits, and with all of the power conference money hasn't won against a ranked team since September 17th, 2016. That's 8 years since they have a victory, at home or on the road, against a ranked team. BYU is doing a great job. We have 8 victories against ranked teams in that same time period.

Perspective matters. BYU is an amazing institution that I love. And the football team is a great team. I have some wonderful memories of games in LES. We are fortunate as fans to have such a great program to cheer for. Let's enjoy the highs and get as wild and crazy as we want. When the inevitable lows happen, let's shake it off and look forward to the next play, the next game, or the next season. Go Cougs!
