I would add that learning 'kana' is at least as high a priority as kanji.

Kana helps promote an understanding of the how Japanese sounds. While is High School in Japan (American school) during Japanese class we would have to frequently repeat the 'kana chart'.. ka, ki, ku, ke, ko; na, ni, nu, ne, no ....
