45-156 on 3rd down - 29%
13-26 on 4th down - 50%
58-182 combined for 32% - 117th of 133 teams
This season so far BYU is
11-39 on 3rd down - 28%
8-10 on 4th down - 80%
19-49 combined for 39% - 84th of 133 teams
If BYU doesn't improve on 3rd downs they will go 33 - 117 (28%) the remainder of the season (X current stats by 3)
If BYU were to end the season with 4th down conversion rate of 65% (which would be top 15 in FBS and be incredible) they would go 18-30 (60%) the remainder of the season (per current stats).
The combined for this season would be 70-196 for 36%. Only 4% better than last season and take BYU from ranked 117th of 133 teams to about 100th of 134 teams.
The point of my post was just to say that I don't agree that BYU's 3rd down conversions aren't a problem which Arod stated in the interview. Third downs were an issue last season and this season so far and that going for it on 4th down more isn't going to change much whether you make 4th down more manageable or not. In order for BYU to get 8 wins or so they will need to improve 3rd down rate and do it against tougher competition.
