Honest answer
I’m a software developer and I work 100% remote. I live in Alabama, and most of my coworkers work in the office in Utah. I do the exact same work they do, but from home.

I have several projects I’m working on. My role is usually to look at our existing codebase, figure out how to add in new functionality without breaking anything, and then writing the code that does what I’m trying to do. Most of the work is figuring out how my changes could cause or have caused some other apparently unrelated system to quit working. This can be very challenging, and it requires the ability to have a detailed understanding of the system I’m working on and imagine ways that two systems can interact.

I have a fair number of meetings, some of which are pointless. During the pointless ones, I half pay attention and the other half of me is either thinking about the project I’m working on, scrolling CB (like right now), or playing a quick game of chess on my phone.

I spend several hours a week helping other devs fix issues with the parts of our system that I’m most familiar with.

I get interrupted a lot in order to do things around the house. I don’t feel that the interruptions make me less productive than my in-office peers, but I could be wrong.
