Your reasoning for why he would take this on makes no sense at all. Plenty of ways for a well connected guy like Weinstein to make money that don’t involve destroying his reputation. The dude runs in circles of highly influential and wealthy people. He very well could be dead wrong on all of it but this isn’t a money grab.
