What good teams do you see in college or the NFL treat 3rd down as a down
to make forth down manageable? Or any team for that matter. There is great risk in going for it on 4th down, especially against good teams, they will make you pay if you turn it over on downs at the 50. There is a reason you don't see teams do it often in college or in the NFL.

BYU is 8 for 10 on 4th down this season, but this is against an FCS school, a bad G5 school and a new P4 team that may have been over hyped in the preseason. This won't be the case against most teams in the conference, they have better defenses. They also have better offenses that will make you pay if you give it to them on the 50 multiple times a game.

Instead of putting yourself in a position where you feel you have to go for it on 4th down, do what good teams do, make getting a first down manageable on 2nd down so it's 3rd and 2. I just don't see going for it on 4th down as a successful strategy, if it was a successful strategy all teams would use 4th down as just another down.
