You are correct. The downside is that the vehicle body is the frame/crumple zone. Which is why in a minor accident,
your vehicle gets totaled with nothing more than some fender damage, but that results in bending of the unibody and irrepairable damage.

So it's a give and take, with a frame...it's easy to keep the frame straight in minor impacts and most of the body panels can be removed and bolted back up.
