Offense after 3 games: We're better than we look but certain players need to see
the field less and others need to see it more.

TL;DR Version: Let's see how the play calling turns out when we have the best players in the game. I think the plays Arod called that have been "head scratchers" would have had a much better outcome with players that actually hit the designed holes, follow their lead blockers/pulling guards, or set the edge per the play's design. I think if we play a few younger players who have graded out better and proven it on tape in the first 3 games, our offense becomes much more potent than what we have seen, especially on 3rd down. I also think it allows Jake to play less recklessly and manage the game more.

Why I think we are better than we have shown:

1. Play Calling vs Proper Execution: The play calling appeared to be poor, especially in the first two games, as there appeared to be a ton of head scratching plays, specifically on 3rd down. The plays didn't make sense when I watched the games live, but after breaking them down by play, there were some good calls that looked bad because some players did not execute as drawn up. It was either because the specific player did not trust their teammates or did not know the playbook - not sure which, but either way it needs to stop. These most glaring positions that I saw were the RBs and TEs and it affected the offense's play as a whole. There were several plays were an RB or TE did not block or hit a hole as designed and it caused the play to fail. I think it eventually even affected Jake's decision making causing him to try to do too much.

2. O-Line: Much improved this year. Against Wyoming we didn’t sub anyone and we played the same 5 guys all game since Makasini was out with an injury. The good- they didn’t allow a single sack. The bad- they allowed too many qb pressures (11 total) and didn’t do great at run blocking. They did get called for some holding calls, but those were some bad calls. Like really bad. PFF grades: Lapuaho 71.4, Leausa 66.7, Pay 62.2, Keim 55.2, and Etienne 52.6. Our tackles took a step back tonight from what we saw from them through the first two games. I’m not too concerned though since their “bad” this week was still better than anything they did last year and that gives me confidence heading into conference play.

3. Players we need more of vs players who need to sit:
NEED MORE PLAYING TIME:
Ryner Swanson (FR)
Ethan Nawahine (JR but recent transfer)
Sione Moa (FR)
Pokai Haunga (FR)
Jojo Phillips (FR)

NEED TO SEE MORE BENCH:
Ethan Erickson (JR)
Miles Davis (JR)
Hinckley Ropati (SR)
Ray Paulo (SR)
Kody Epps (JR)

*Part of the reason some of these players on the naughty list get more PT at game time might be due to their experience and understanding of the playbook vs the incoming freshmen who still need to prove to coaches that they can be relied on. I hope that I'm right and that the coaches see what I am seeing, but I am only watching game film and I really know nothing.
