Most of the time Grimes was there A rod called the plays.

Grimes was basically a Glorified Offensive line Coach with the Offensive Coordinator title. He was replaced as player caller because he’s not very good at it. Sadly ARod isn’t much better.
thats also why Grimes got fired at Baylor great offense Line Coach bad Offense Coordinator/ Play caller.
