At several points in history, I'm sure they would have tried to destroy it if they could. There are quite a few people who genuinely think BYU is in the wrong for existing as an institution. I think some don't even think of it as a University, and that it doesn't do anything other universities do.
I do get some of their criticisms, but I don't understand legitimately thinking something as big as BYU should cease to exist because I don't like it.
