A cut that would require stitches is going to be a problem on his throwing hand...
gripping the ball will be painful, and numbing the finger will cause issues with gripping as well. If he broke the finger, he's done for the year. If it's a cut, my guess is he will wear a glove and split the finger up until it feels better.
