Saying other P4 teams struggled on offense so it's ok we did isn't comforting
Yes, on any given week you can find examples of teams that underperform on offense. Almost every offense will struggle on occasion, even the best. But it's not a great sign if you're struggling every week. And in our case there is now a long body of work extending to last season. It's not just one game. We wanted to see Retzlaff prove that he's a changed man but it was the same old issues. The same soul-crushing interceptions. Not those down the field 50/50 deep shot interceptions. Interceptions on or behind the line of scrimmage that lose games single handedly.

This was not unexpected. Our QB was preseason rated bottom of the conference. There was a reason for that. I hope he'll prove everyone wrong, and I do still believe there's a chance he will. But forgive me for being concerned.

I'm still in wait-and-see mode because we don't know how good SMU's defense really is. I also believe a fair amount of blame probably lies with ARod. Retzlaff seems like a fantastic guy. I'm truly rooting for him. I have no idea if Bohanon would be any better, but if we see another ugly fumble or interception I think it's time to find out.
