Steve Young. 1982. Junior year, after McMahon graduated.
50% passing, 5 TD's, 5 Int's his soph year, 1981. Had a great game in the season opener against UNLV, 270 yards, 1 TD, 1 Int.
Second game at Geogia. Lost by 3. 6 Interceptions. 3 sacks.
Should he have been benched?

No one ever said it had to be a permanent benching, take him out for a series

He also gave the backups meaningful minutes.

If Retzlaff had the same career TD/int ratio those others did, then I would side with you.

Detmer had 41TDs and 28INTs in 1990. What ratio is that? Not very good.

Six or seven of those came his first freshman game against Wyoming

No, he had 28 INT in just 1990. None of those came his freshman year vs Wyoming

TFD threw for enough TDs that it didn't matter what he did the rest of the time.

Ok but he also threw for 5188 yards that season

I didn’t realize we had a 5 star, future NFL #5 overall pick as a back up

It’s all relative. The benched starter was also a 5 star future nfl star qb.
