The authoritative leader at the top must have the goods and the program will necessarily grow or shrink to the size of the top leadership over time.
Usually, high potential aspiring assistants won't join the staff. Genius wants to be mentored by genius.
In the rare circumstances when people with more capability/vision than the top leader do join such an organization, the result is dysfunctional infighting and loss of morale. It doesn't work well, EVER.
FWIW, I happen to support Kalani because he is good at making friends for BYU and is fully committed to the larger purpose. But, he is no Kyle Whittingham or Lavell Edwards. KS is a good above average D-1 leader/coach and will continue to improve, but is not elite. I would have hired the Meet The Mormons Navy Coach N who is very high level now at San Jose State, where without the limitations of a military academy, I predict he will build a much stronger program. A rare miss it seems by the very able Tom Holmoe, who preferred Kalani all along.
