Tysman Rap 3rd String
Why do our OC's treat the starting quarterback like a sacred calling?
I like ARod. I thought that when he had a good QB (Zach Wilson, Jaren Hall), and good O lines, his play calling was above average. When his QB isn't able to execute effectively, his primary fault is not trying something else. Going with the next guy. Seeing if someone else can make something happen.

Why not? Saban benched his starting QB in the championship game!

I like Jake. I am sure the team loves him. Seeing what else you got, doesn't change that. Especially when the race was supposedly so close anyway, and that he won the job in part due to ball security in practice.

Trying something esle isn't betrayal. It doesn't have to be confidence crushing. Tell the players upfront that being the starter doesn't mean tenure. If its not your night and someone else can step in and help us win, of course we would do that. It doesn't have to mean a lack of confidence in one, or that his job is on the line, etc. I just means we are going to go with whoever gives us the best chance to win in each game and in each situation.

In fact the opposite is true... if you keep playing someone that the rest of the team can clearly see isn't going to help them win, which would make it seem that the coaches aren't doing everything they can to win the game in progress (not making a change may feel like the coaches are OK if that leads to an L), then you could lose the team.

There has to be consequences. A running back puts the ball on the ground he may not play the rest of the game, or at least for a possession or two. A QB w three costly, unforced turnovers, has to know there are consequences. Especially when they are reckless, careless, preventable turnovers (and is his 5th game of doing that). Turnovers pushing too much or caused by miscommunication, good defensive play, tipped balls, etc, can be lived with. Unforced, careless play, cannot.

If Gerry isn't any better, that is ok (and, frankly, it couldn't be worse). Its not permanent, you can always go back. If Gerry isn't the answer move on to #3. You can always go back #1 or #2. You would hold any other position accountable. Why not the QB? Winning coaches do this. I wish our coaches would do this.

Ok. I'm done now 🙂
