If BYU can beat SMU, they keep hopes of making a bowl game alive, and likely improved enough to compete in just about every game. If BYU loses though, there's almost no chance at making a bowl game, and this team probably is only marginally better than last year's team which went 2-7 in conference play, including getting blown out several times.
